Piecing a border from multiple pieces is a lot more tricky than just piecing a plain fabric border with fabric strips and I admit - this is one of my least favorite things to piece because it has.

Start by cutting two 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" white rectangles for each block. Then cut four 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares for each block. Take one of the white rectangles and lay a black square on top, right sides together and matching the raw edges. Stitch diagonally across the black square and carefully press back. Do the same for the other side.

Sew 1/4″ on either side of the marked line. Cut on the marked line. Press unit open. Place a square on unit as shown above and mark a diagonal line, corner to corner. Sew 1/4″ on each side of the marked line. Cut on the marked line. Press unit open. Repeat with remaining unit-for a total of 4 flying geese blocks.

As you may know, a flying "goose" is twice as wide as it is tall! On the bottom left here there's just one, so it should be a 2″ x 4″ block (if we start with 2″ as a base for calculating) then the dark green should be 4″ x 4″, the blue is 4″ x 6″ and so on, so the orange one I count 8 flying geese, that would be 4″ x 16″.

Cut the Flying Geese square 1 1/4″ larger than the finished length of your desired block. Cut the four smaller Sky squares 7/8″ larger than the finished width of your desired block. How to Make a Flying Geese Block (5 Different Ways!) Simple. Handmade

Step 1: Cut your pieces. For my example, I will be making a 4 ¼"x8 ½" flying geese block. I'll use my flying geese to create a border on a large quilt I am currently working on. Since I am supposed to add ½" to each dimension for my pieces to cut, I will be cutting the following per block: 1- 4 ¾"x9" rectangle. 2- 4 ¾" squares.
